I had Demetrios Kydonieus (Princeton, NJ) and his buddy Chris LaBelle (Jackson, NJ) out on a 5hr Bay and Inlet Striped Bass charter. We started off throwing artificials and only had one bump, and with the outgoing bay temps hovering between 46-48F it was a serious case of lockjaw for the bay striped bass (in comparison incoming temps ranged to 52-54F). Unfortunately, we only had the outgoing tide for the duration of the trip and with a better shot at fish in the ocean; Demetrios and Chris opted to make it an ocean trip and our only option was live-lining bunker or fishing with spot. We found an active pod of bunker with some fish on them and many more boats; the guys had about an hour of activity before the bass shut down. Unfortunately after the 4th run-off, the bass bite dwindled and we ran as far as Seaside looking for bass on pods - but only finding happy bunker. Sometimes you only get a narrow window and have to make the most of it, but that is fishing. We will be back at them. I took a picture of one of the pods "finning" - clearly no bass or blues on this school.
